When you are in a leadership role, giving feedback is part of helping others learn and grow. This can be a challenging if you aren’t comfortable giving constructive criticism. Here are some tips to help you give more effective feedback, and feel good about it too!
1. Find them doing something right. Compliment what the person did well, and acknowledge their talents.
2. Instead of criticizing everything they did wrong, offer suggestions to show them how they might have done it differently.
3. Maybe they haven’t heard different perspectives. Ask them how they feel about your suggestions and if they have any additional ideas.
We all want to do our very best, when you point out all the things someone is doing wrong it can feel defeating. Empower them instead!
